São Paulo - The City That Never Sleeps
São Paulo is home to almost 11 million people, the largest city in the Western Hemisphere. It boasts a diverse population, with people of European (specially Italy and Portugal), African, Middle-Eastern, and Asian descent.
São Paulo is the driving force behind Brazil's economy and industry. It is one of the richest cities in the world, it has a gigantic infrastructure of buildings, roads, subways, and trains. São Paulo is basically Brazil's equivalent of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas all rolled up in one.
The culture and social life of São Paulo is unrivaled in Brazil. It is home to MASP, the museum of art of São Paulo, renowned for its excellent collections and unusual architecture. It has a world class symphonic orchestra, housed in the newly renovated Sala São Paulo (pictured at left). The city also plays host to numerous musical, athletic and arts events. It also has a popular nightlife, which famously only starts after midnight, giving rise to the nickname of the city that never sleeps.
However, as much as the Paulistas, the natives of São Paulo, enjoy working and partying, their favorite pastime is dining out. Every type of cuisine under the sun can be found in the thousands of restaurants, clubs, bars, and carts peppered around the city. And of all the types of cuisine found in this metropolis, none other has been perfected as well and is as appreciated as churrasco. True, churrasco has its origins in the south of the country, but in São Paulo it has found a second home where it could thrive and evolve to its fullest.
